Flat roofs; felt coverings to
Dormers, Extensions, Porches, Garages and even a
Whole House to which in the 1970’s no Building
Society would provide a Mortgage.
Flat Roofs, built with felt are
often without sufficient insulation, when most
flat roofs were installed 25mm of insulation was
all that was required. With the latest Building
Regulations, Part L:
the need to conserve heat is even
more critical, your hard earned fuel is going

through the flat roof like an
open window.
Why has felt been such a problem;
it has joints, it is tar based, people have
walked on the chippings, this cracks and of
course you are never quite sure where the leaks
come from. Many roofs leak slowly, the roofs
timbers absorb an amount of water, like a
sponge, the warmth of the sun can dispense it,
but it is still leaking without it being
apparent.
